Holidays in Nauders
The magic of time and the beauty of nature
Nauders on its high plateau on the Reschenpass looks back on a long and eventful history.
Ancient trade routes, such as the famous Roman imperial road "Via Claudia Augusta", lead past the picturesquely situated town, making it a hospitable and cosmopolitan place from early on. Today, the magic of this history is combined in a special way with the rhythm of the seasons and their respective customs and rites to create a special holiday feeling.
The location
Nauders is picturesquely nestled in a high valley above the Inntal between the Finstermünzpass in the north and the Reschenpass in the south. The borders of Austria, Switzerland and Italy meet at the "Dreiländergrenzstein" (2180 m) in the south-west of the municipality. The landmark of the entire region is Reschensee with its famous sunken tower. It is only a few kilometres from Nauders to the Italian and Swiss borders. The privileged location in the border triangle makes the village the ideal starting point for discoveries and excursions in three countries.
The place
Excavations indicate early Bronze Age settlements. As early as the 2nd century, the village was marked on a map found in Alexandria on the Via Claudia Augusta. Nauders itself was first mentioned in a document in 1150 as "Nudres". The village centre shows a strong Rhaeto-Romanic influence. The dominant feature is Schloss Naudersberg, which was also the seat of the court for a long time. In the immediate vicinity of the castle is St Leonhard's Chapel, the oldest preserved church in Tyrol. Without losing the magic of its history, Nauders has developed into a modern and future-orientated tourist resort in recent years.
Landscape and climate
The climate in Nauders is significantly milder than its northern neighbours due to the southern influence. This is characterised by the fact that despite the altitude (1400 m), potatoes, rye, barley, oats and wheat still thrive and ripen. Winter sports enthusiasts also benefit from the special geographical location. Snow from the south and north, combined with the altitude and a modern snowmaking system, guarantee an exceptionally high level of snow reliability. The heavily terraced landscape bears witness to intensive agricultural use through arable farming. The unique beauty of the landscape is also reflected in the region's natural monuments.
